John H. McDuff, Jr. of Quincy passed away on Wednesday, March 12, 2014 at age 80. An animal activist, Mr. McDuff was born in Boston, the son of the late John H. McDuff and the late Mildred L. McDuff-Cates. A graduate of Dorchester High School and Emerson College, he worked as a manager at Brigham & Women’s Hospital for many years until retiring in 1987. In 1982 he founded the Quincy Animal League and served as its president until his death. For his work on behalf of animals, he was named man of the year by the Quincy Citizens Association and was honored by the MSPCA in 1995 as Humane Hero of the Year. Through his efforts pound seizure for experimentation was stopped in Quincy, a new animal shelter was built and the use of exotic animals in circuses was banned. Mr. McDuff was a member of the So. Shore Humane Society, PETA, New England Anti-Vivisection society, MA Citizens for Life, Mensa and Intertel and was also active in politics. He is survived by a number of friends including William Rokes and Beverly Brand, both of Quincy, as well as many cousins in Nova Scotia.
