John G. Groppi

John G. Groppi of North Providence, RI, formerly of East Boston, passed away on Tuesday, February 19, 2013 at age 96. A WWII Veteran, US Army, he was the recipient of the Purple Heart for wounds received in the Battle of the Solomon Islands and was also in action at Guadalcanal and the southern Philippines. He worked as a school custodian for the City of Boston for over 40 years, he enjoyed bowling, baseball, gardening and playing cards.

The beloved husband of the late Catherine A. (McHale) Groppi, John was the loving father of Loreen M. Sophis and her husband Greg of Whitman and Geri Bolivar and her husband Thomas of Johnston, RI; dear grandfather of Adam, David and Julie; and is also survived by his companion Maria Bonitati and many loving nieces and nephews.

There will be a visiting hour on Friday, February 22 from 10:00 to 11:00AM prior to a Funeral Service at 11:00AM at the Dennis Sweeney Funeral Home 74 Elm St. Quincy Center. Family and friends are invited. Burial is at New Calvary Cemetery, Boston
