Joseph F. “Joe” Cortese, Ret. Detective QPD, passed away on Friday, November 6, 2015 at age 83. A lifelong Quincy resident, Joe was a member of the Navy Fighting Seabees and served in the Quincy Police Dept. as a detective before retiring in 1977. He helped start the Quincy Police Union, was the first Canine Officer on the South Shore with his Police Dog, a German Shepard named Prince, and was a member of the Adam Heights Men’s Club. The son of the late Omero and Josephine (Mercurio) Cortese, Joe was the beloved father of Michael Cortese and his wife Grace of E. Sandwich, brother of Teresa M. Clardy and her husband Charles of Randolph and the late Marion T. Cortese and Francis Cortese; uncle and Godfather of Christine, great-uncle of Luke, Jr. Joe is also survived by his loving and faithful companion and best friend of 35 years, Virginia “Ginny” Ames, her family and many loved and loving friends. Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, November 11 from 4:00 to 8:00PM at the Dennis Sweeney Funeral Home 74 Elm St. Quincy Center. Family and friends are invited. On Thursday there will be a gathering at the funeral home at 9:00AM followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00AM at St. John the Baptist Church 44 School St. Quincy. Burial is at Mt. Wollaston Cemetery.
