Adolph J. Monson of North Attleboro, MA and Pompano Beach, FL, died on January 18, 2014 at age 94.  Al was  raised on a dairy farm in West Salem, Wisconsin where he was born on May 6, 1919, one of four children of Clara (Moan) and George Monson. Joining the 43rd Division of the US Army in 1939, he served honorably for 5 years. Following his discharge in 1944, he settled in Quincy, MA. He worked as a cook at Eddie’s Diner, where he met his future wife, Ella May Bonani. In 1947, he and Ella May were married and he started working for HP Hood in Boston. In 1955, they opened up an A & W Root Beer franchise on Quincy Avenue and named it Al’s Drive-In.  After managing the business for 10 years, they sold the franchise and opened up the Martin & Monson Sales and Mobile Home Park on Route 1 in Foxboro. They then purchased and managed Guertin’s Gardens and Rustic Pines Estates in North Attleboro.

Al and Ella traveled extensively, both domestically and internationally, visiting every state in the US except Alaska. Al was active in the community where he was a member of the Lion’s Club and the Mobile Home Association.  After semi-retiring, Al became an avid golfer, enjoying courses in Florida and Massachusetts. He also enjoyed bowling and playing a friendly game of cards, especially poker and cribbage.

Predeceased by his wife, Ella May of North Attleboro, his sisters, Myrtle Olson and Charlotte Indahl and brother Alton Staff, all of Wisconsin, Al is survived by numerous nieces and nephews and many good friends. He was loved by his family and friends and will be missed by all who knew him.

Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, January 23 from 9:00 to 11:00AM, immediately followed by a Funeral Service at 11:00AM at the Dennis Sweeney Funeral Home 74 Elm St. Quincy Center. Family and friends are invited. Burial is at Blue Hill Cemetery, Braintree.

Al’s family would like to thank each one of his caregivers who made such a positive difference in his daily life.
