Alice Marion (Forbes) South of Braintree passed away on Sunday, November 14, 2021 at the age of 77 after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Alice was the daughter of the late Fred and Alice (Rich) Forbes, she was the beloved wife of 51 years of the late James T. South, both life-long Braintree residents and childhood friends; loving and devoted mother of Daniel South and his wife Kellie of Braintree, Katie Hooper and her husband Ken, and the late Michelle South. She was the proud grandmother of Mila South and Maddie and James Hooper.

Alice graduated from Braintree High School, class of 1961 and worked on their class reunions for many years. She worked at Old Colony Trust Company after graduating from secretarial school. After her children started school Alice began working as the registrar for Totland College Nursery School and stayed for 30 years. She co-chaired the PTO at the Morrison School, was a Cub Scout leader and taught Sunday School for 10 years. Alice was a life-long member of Union Congregational Church and served on the Board of Directors for Totland College, Couples Club, Scholarship Committee, Missions Committee and bowled with the church league for many years. Alice helped with every church fair and organized the apple pie making event year after year, as well as the book room.

Alice loved the beach and taking walks down the Cape with her family, she did ceramics for over 20 years and was an avid reader. Her greatest joy however was her family and she loved spending time with her son, daughter, their spouses and her grandchildren. She especially loved baking with Mila, Maddie and James, watching them swim in the pool and playing games with them, where she was even able to win once in a while.

Her wish is for everyone to remember that “Kindness Counts” and to try to do one act of kindness a day.

Family and friends are invited to visiting hours, which will be held on Friday, November 19 from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at the Dennis Sweeney Funeral Home, 74 Elm St., Quincy Center. On Saturday, November 20 there will be a funeral service at 10:00 am at Union Congregational Church, 74 Commercial St., Braintree with the burial to follow at the Village Cemetery in Weymouth.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Alice’s memory to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, PO Box 50 Memphis, TN 38101-9929 or Joubert Syndrome & Related Disorders Foundation, 145 West Avenue, Cincinnati, OH 45215.
