Carmine Anthony “Tony” DelGreco passed away at John Adams Nursing Home on Thursday, August 6, 2009 at age 91. Born in Boston, he traveled back to Anversa, Italy with his family at age 3, staying for 15 years. Upon his return, he worked on the Braintree farm which is now the South Shore Plaza, walking daily from his Liberty St. home. Tony then worked for Old Colony Crushed Stone, before signing on at the Fore River Shipyard where he worked until his retirement in 1980. Tony met his beloved wife, the late Mary A. Palumbo at the Strand Theater and married in 1943, settling in Quincy to raise their family. Tony loved to recall the story of his trip back to Anversa, Italy at age 60. He hadn’t been in the village for over 42 years, but he was given such a warm reception, he felt he had never left.
Tony is survived by his loving children, Paul A. DelGreco and his wife Linda of Quincy, Robert C. DelGreco of Quincy, Michael R. DelGreco and his wife Cheryl of Scituate, James K. DelGreco of Weymouth, Kathleen Belt and her husband Barry of Quincy, Marianne Ward and her husband Richard of Durham, NC and Carol Anne Barden and her husband Stewart of Dunedin, FL. He also leaves 6 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and his sister Lena DelVecchio of Quincy.
Visiting hours will be held at the Dennis Sweeney Funeral Home 74 Elm St. Quincy Center on Sunday, August 9, from 4:00 to 8:00pm. Family and friends are invited. There will be a gathering at the funeral home on Monday at 8:00am followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Joseph’s Church Quincy Point at 9:00am. Burial is in Blue Hill Cemetery, Braintree.
