Claire T. Doherty, a 27 year resident of Quincy and formerly of Charlestown entered into eternal life on Thursday, October 15, 2015 at her home in Quincy following a courageous battle with cancer. She was 81 years old.

Claire was born in Boston on October 1, 1934, a daughter of the late James J. and Martha (Ahern) Doherty. She grew up in Charlestown where she was educated in St. Francis De Sales Parochial School and graduated from Cathedral High School in 1953. She worked for 37 years at New England Telephone Company and retired as a Supervisor in the Accounting Department. Claire was a devoted member of St. Joseph Church, Quincy, the Pioneer Society of New England Telephone, and a lifelong friend to her Charlestown, Cathedral High School and Telephone Company Colleagues.  She enjoyed skiing with her many nieces and nephews, reading, golfing, bowling, water aerobics, and spending time in Falmouth on Cape Cod.

Claire is the devoted sister of the late John J., Joseph P., James J., Leonard Doherty and the late Mary L. Murphy, Margaret Thomas, Mildred O’Leary and Alice E. Lyons. Claire is survived by loving nephews and nieces:  George Thomas, Martha Ryan, Martha Sullivan, Robert O’Leary, Geraldine Sullivan, Mary Clifford, Mary L. Murphy, CSJ, James Murphy, Elizabeth Erickson, Alice Bertini, Leonard Lyons, Joseph Lyons, James Doherty, John Doherty and Joseph Doherty.   She is predeceased by her nephews, James J. Thomas, Joseph O’Leary, John J. Murphy, John O’Leary,  John J. Lyons and her nieces Claire T. Lyons and Martha Lyons. Claire will be missed by her many grandnieces and grandnephews, great grandnieces and great grandnephews. Claire is the former wife of the late William S. Summers and stepmother to Patricia Shapley, Robert Summers, Russell Summers , Mary Jane Summers, Frances Lonergan ,  Catherine Altherr and the late William Summers, Jr.   She is the grandmother of Christopher Ryan and numerous grandchildren.

Claire’s charities included St. Jude Hospital, St.  Joseph Parish, Quincy, and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Boston. In lieu of flowers, please consider making donations to one of the above named charities in her honor.

Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday morning October 21 from 9:00 to 10:30AM at the Dennis Sweeney Funeral Home 74 Elm St. Quincy Center. Family and friends are invited. Funeral Mass at 11AM at St. Joseph Church 550 Washington St. Quincy. Burial at Blue Hills Cemetery in Braintree.
