Eleanor A. (O’Brien) McBride of Quincy passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family in her home on Monday, February 25, 2019 at age 85.

Eleanor’s life revolved around her deep faith, sense of community, her family and many friends. A lifelong Quincy resident, Eleanor attended St. John’s Elementary School, graduating in 1947. She graduated from Cathedral High School, Boston in 1951 and it was there where she met her husband of 62 years, Bob McBride, formerly of Dorchester. Eleanor was a member of the first graduating class of Catherine Labouré School of Nursing in 1954 and then worked at Carney Hospital in Dorchester as an RN. A parishioner of St. Joseph’s Church in Quincy for over 58 years where for many years she faithfully attended daily Mass, Eleanor was a member of the St. Joseph’s Ladies Sodality, serving as Prefect from 1968-1970. A member of both the Catherine Labouré Alumni Association and the Cathedral High School Alumni Committee, Eleanor enjoyed planning the annual Cathedral HS reunions.

Eleanor was a faithful fan of all her children’s activities and sporting events, ranging from Cub Scouts to Panther football, cheerleading, youth baseball, and dancing recitals to name a few. You could always spot Eleanor in the crowd by her infamous cowbell at numerous sporting events at AWHS in Braintree. All her and Bob’s six children attended AWHS where she was also an active member of the Bishops Guild Association.

When Eleanor’s family was younger, she enjoyed many summers at Hampton Beach with her family and friends. In their retirement, Eleanor and Bob loved making day trips to northern New England. But for over 30 years, Martha’s Vineyard was their favorite vacation spot every final week in August.

The beloved wife of Robert E. McBride, Eleanor was the loving mother of Michael T. McBride and his wife Marie of Abington, Thomas E. McBride and his wife Lynda of Shrewsbury, Maureen Mitropoulos and her husband Nicholas of No. Reading, Mary E. Joyce and her husband Dan of Scituate, Margaret McBride of Hingham and Marilyn McBride of Quincy. She was the devoted grandmother of Robert, Andrew, Jennifer, John, Alexander, Timothy, Shelagh, Brendan, Daniel and the late Christopher; dear sister of Marie Newton of Avon and the late Mary Ann D’Antonio; and is also survived by four dear sisters-in-law, a brother- in- law, and many nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are invited to visiting hours on Sunday, March 3 from 2:00 to 6:00 PM at the Dennis Sweeney Funeral Home 74 Elm St. Quincy Center. On Monday, there will be a gathering at the funeral home at 9:00 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM at St. Joseph’s Church, Quincy. Burial is at Mt. Wollaston Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Eleanor may be made to St. Joseph’s Church in Quincy, 556 Washington St. Quincy, MA 02169 or Labouré College, 303 Adams St. Office of Institutional Advancement, Milton, MA 02186.
