Francis E. Whalen of Quincy passed away surrounded by his family on Friday, March 28, 2014 at age 79. Born in Providence, RI where he was raised and educated, he was a Korean War Veteran, US Army and Marine Corps. A mechanical engineer, Francis worked for Leo J. Crowley & Assoc., Camp, Dresser & McKee and the State of MA Hynes Convention Center before retiring. He served as a coach in Quincy Youth Hockey, President of the Merrymount Association, Secretary for the Squantum Yacht Club and past President of the Boston Chapter of ASHRE.
The beloved husband of Regina M. (Crowley) Whalen, Francis was the loving father of Michele M. Whalen of Quincy, Michael F. Whalen and his wife Janet of Hanson, Mark R. Whalen and his wife Lisa of Quincy and Kevin L. Whalen and his wife Patty of Weymouth; dear grandfather of Thomas, Matthew, Samantha, Andrew and Megan; beloved brother of Barbara Landi of Greenville, RI, Richard Whalen of Providence and Lorraine Carnavale of E. Providence; and is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, April 1 from 4:00 to 8:00PM at the Dennis Sweeney Funeral Home 74 Elm St. Quincy Center. Family and friends are invited. On Wednesday, there will be a gathering at the funeral home at 9:00AM followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00AM at Holy Trinity Parish, Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, 227 Sea Street, Quincy. Burial with Military Honors is at Blue Hill Cemetery.
