George Edwin Davenport, Sr. of Abington, MA, formerly of Quincy, MA, passed away July 20, 2014, at the age of 85. He died as he lived, surrounded by loving family.

The son of the late Angelina and Edwin M. Davenport, George was the beloved husband of the late Bernice M. (Curran) Davenport, brother of the late Emily Luiz, Peter Davenport, Adele “Cookie” Powell, Edwin Jr., survived by sisters Marjorie Mignosa, Dorothy Pinard and brother John Davenport. He is survived by 10 children, Brian, Joan, Bernice “Bunny”, Patricia and George, Davenport, Sharon Leahy, Donna Libby, Joyce Harvill, Jeanne O’Connor, & Janet Coates; and by 19 grandchildren; James, Michael, Danny, Adam, Joe and Samantha Leahy, Richard and Jessica Libby, SFC Nicholas Davenport, US Army, Kelly, Brian and Christopher O’Connor, Douglas Coates, Trish, Emily, Tina, April and Zachary Downey, and Erica Brown. He is also survived by numerous great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

A WWII Navy Veteran, he worked his entire life as a printer for Franklin Print in W. Quincy. Quartermaster of Sir Thomas More Drum and Bugle Corps, he was a longtime member of St. Moritz Horseshoe Club and the American Legion.  George loved gardening, bowling, playing horseshoes, & teaching his kids & grandkids card games and was known to his wife and kids as “Mr. Wonderful”.

Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, July 24 from 4:00 to 8:00PM at the Dennis Sweeney Funeral Home 74 Elm St. Quincy Center. Family and friends are invited. On Friday there will be a Service at the funeral home at 10:00AM, followed by burial with Military Honors at Blue Hill Cemetery, Braintree.
