Harold “Les” Whalen, Sr., a lifelong resident of Quincy, passed away on January 4th after a long battle with cancer. Born on December 28, 1930, Les was a veteran of the US Army and was proud to have served his country. Les was the devoted husband of Lorraine (Gilblair) Whalen, having celebrated 63 years together. Always a hard worker, he was employed at General Dynamics and Freaney Construction for many years before accepting the position of Painting Supervisor with the Thomas Flatley Co. As a hobby he would work with his hands, painting houses, renovating his home or homes of his children, painting church halls, woodworking projects and playing the harmonica. Les was most proud of his 10 grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them once he retired. He loved fishing with them and attending their sporting events, graduations and family gatherings and was very happy to have celebrate his 84th birthday surrounded by his family.

The son of the late Harold J. and Panzie (Lyle) Whalen, Les is survived by his wife Lorraine and his children, Harold L. “Hal” Whalen, Jr., Glen Whalen and his wife Michelle, all of Quincy and Karen Mann of Holbrook; former father-in-law of Colleen Whalen. “Papa” will be sorely missed by his pride and joys, his grandchildren, Daniel and Brian Whalen, Lindsey, Kylie, Julie and Jason Whalen, Christopher, Madison, Caitlin and Ethan Mann.

Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, January 7 from 5:00 to 8:00PM at the Dennis Sweeney Funeral Home 74 Elm St. Quincy Center. On Thursday there will be a a gathering at the funeral home at 10:30AM followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:30AM at Most Blessed Sacrament Church 1000 Sea St. Burial with Military Honors is at Pine Hill Cemetery, W. Quincy.
