James J. Zupkofska, of Weymouth, a Norfolk County Correction Officer, died Saturday, August 22, 2009 at the South Shore Hospital in Weymouth at age 45. Born in Boston, he was raised and educated in Quincy. He worked for 15 years in the Tunnel Workers Union Local 88, operating a tunnel boring machine. In 2004, Jim started his career with the Norfolk County Sheriff’s Office where he was a member of the Honor Guard, the elite Sheriff’s Response Team and the mountain bike unit. Each year, he was a key participant in the NCSO’s Jail & Bail fundraiser for the MDA. In superb physical condition, he competed in triathlons, including one last year to benefit the American Cancer Society and belonged to the Bayshore Athletic Club. A member of the Braintree Yacht Club, he loved boating and was an avid scuba diver, a member of the South Shore Divers and Coast Guard Auxiliary. He and his wife Laurie were volunteers for Meals on Wheels, enjoying his visits and chats with his elderly clients.

The beloved husband for 15 years of Laurie C. (Givens), he was the loving son of the late James Zupkofska and Virginia “Ginny” (Callahan) St Angelo and his step-father Daniel St. Angelo of Quincy and beloved grandson of Kay Callahan of Quincy. He was the dear brother of Robert Zupkofska of Quincy and Kim Griffin and her husband Brian of Milton, son-in-law of Leila Pratt of East Charleston, VT, brother-in-law of Amy Syiek of Littleton, Uncle of Steven and Robert Zupkofska and William Givens-Hall and is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Visiting hours will be held from 4:00 to 8:00pm on Thursday, August 27 at the Dennis Sweeney Funeral Home 74 Elm St,. Quincy Center. There will be a gathering at the funeral home on Friday at 10:00am followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00am at Holy Trinity Parish, Most Blessed Sacrament Church 1017 Sea St. Quincy. Cremation will follow.
