Obituaries

James P. McGroarty of Quincy passed away on Friday, September 21, 2012 at age 96. A lifelong Quincy resident, Jim was a WWII Veteran of the US Army. He worked as a ship fitter, then for Grossmans where he was the Garden Center Manager for 20 years in the Braintree, Quincy and Wellesley stores. He later worked as a manager of the Wollaston Theater and served for 9 years as a Court Officer at the Dedham District Court. Jim was the Senior Member of the St. Joseph’s Holy Name Society where he served as an usher and Eucharistic Minister. A charter member of the Ward II Civic Association, he was a lifetime member of the Town River Yacht Club and a member of Archbishop Williams Men’s Club and the MA Horticultural Society. He most loved gardening and spending time with his family and grandchildren.

The beloved husband of the late Meridia A. (Williams) McGroarty, Jim was the loving father of Patrick J. McGroarty , Kevin F. McGroarty and Michael A. McGroarty and his wife Joanne, all of Quincy, dear grandfather of Alex, Christopher, Matthew, Robert, Paige, Joanna, Kathryn, Meredith and Ryan.

Visiting hours will be held on Monday. September 24 from 5:00 to 9:00PM at the Dennis Sweeney Funeral Home 74 Elm St. Quincy Center. Family and friends are invited. On Tuesday there will be a gathering at the funeral home at 9:00AM followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00AM at St. Joseph’s Church 550 Washington St. Quincy Point. Burial with Military Honors is at Mt. Wollaston Cemetery.
