Joseph “Joe” L. Butler of Quincy, formerly of South Boston, passed away Sunday, January 10, 2016, our hero, at age 87.

Joe, son of Edward and Gertrude “Gert” (Morton) Butler of Boston, was a US Army Veteran of the Korean War. After completing his time in the service, he worked as a stableman for the Massachusetts State Laboratory in Jamaica Plain where he cared for the Mounted State Police horses.

Loving husband of the late Mary E. (Lawrence) Butler, Joe was the beloved father of Rosemary Kelley of Braintree, MA; Arleen Hitchcock of St. John, USVI; Josephine Aguiar of Waco, TX; Joseph Butler of Watertown, MA; Betty Boucher of Phoenix, AZ; and Daniel Butler of Iowa Falls, IA. Dear brother of Frank Galvin of Foxboro, MA; Charles Galvin of Middleboro, MA; James “Porky” Galvin of Quincy, MA; and the late Edward, James, Robert and Russell “Rusty” Butler, Mary Clasby, Elizabeth Macaluso and George “Gigi” Galvin. He is survived by many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Joe was an avid bicycle rider and was friends with many folks at the intersections where he stopped to rest during his daily rides. Three to five times a week, he visited the L Street Bathhouse in South Boston. Joe was passionate about his family, friends and grooming horses. He and his late wife Mary were longtime residents of the Town Brook House where they leave many friends behind.

Family and friends are invited to visiting hours on Saturday, January 16 from 11:00AM to 3:00PM at the Dennis Sweeney Funeral Home, 74 Elm Street, Quincy, MA 02169. A funeral service will follow at 3:00PM. Joe and Mary Butler will be interred at the Bourne National Cemetery.

Please join family and friends for a celebration of life at The Town Brook House, 45 Brackett St, Quincy, MA 02169 immediately following the funeral service.
