Kathleen Powers, age 105, of Quincy’s Hough’s Neck passed away on Thursday, December 30, 2010 at Colonial Nursing Home in Weymouth. Born in Dublin, Ireland on June 14, 1905, she moved at age 3 to Liverpool, England with her younger sister and brother to live with relatives. In 1921, sponsored by her Aunt Nora Flynn, a 16 year old Kathleen sailed with her sister Nora from Liverpool to Boston to live with their sister Mary Payne in East Boston. Arriving there on a Friday, she went to work the following Monday at Lowney’s Chocolate in Cambridge earning $7 per week.

Married to John H. Powers on Jan. 30, 1930, they had two sons, Edward (& Patricia) Powers of Quincy and John (& Carol) Powers of Falmouth. Moving to Hough’s Neck in July 1938, they rented a small cottage on Island Ave, later moving to Orleans St. and finally to Bird St. in 1942 where Kathleen lived until 2006. She worked for many years as a housekeeper in Quincy and Milton and was a member of the Hough’s Neck Community Council. Her husband of 51 years worked as a fisherman for the Boston Fish Pier and passed away in 1981. Kathleen claimed her long, healthy life was due to careful diet, exercise, the love and care of her family, friends and helpful neighbors, as well as the Hough’s Neck air.

She was the Grandmother to 8 grandchildren: Sharon Joyce of Braintree, Susan Molloy of W. Roxbury, John Powers of FL, Lynn Crawford of Reading, Kathy Powell of Marblehead, Debbie Infascelli of Norwell, Ed Powers, Jr. of Weymouth and Nancy Bridges of W. Falmouth. She was also the proud Great-Grandmother of 15 great-grandchildren: Jacqueline, Liam, Meghan, Colin, Lauren, Kevin, Nolan, Olivia, Cameron, Sean, Brendan, Matthew, Andrew, Julie and Charlotte.

Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, January 4 from 4:00 to 8:00pm at the Dennis Sweeney Funeral Home 74 Elm St. Quincy Center. Family and friends are invited.
