Dr. Leo F. AmRhein, Jr. died on March 16, 2011 at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center after a twenty-six year battle with Parkinson’s disease. Born in 1944 in Quincy, MA, he was the son of the late Leo F. Amrhein, MD and the late Leah Dalton Amrhein.

Dr. AmRhein was a graduate of Boston College High School, College of the Holy Cross, and Tufts Medical School, Class of 1970. Following an internship at Maine Medical Center, he served as a physician in the US Navy for 3 years. He did his residency in psychiatry at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in NH and Tufts New England Medical Center in Boston.

Dr. AmRhein was the medical director of “Discovery”, a day treatment psychiatric facility in Quincy, MA. He also had a private practice in Hingham, MA. As his disease progressed, Dr. AmRhein used his illness to model for his patients how to deal with adversity. Though Dr. Amrhein was recognized in the medical community as a brilliant psychiatrist, he was known, most notably, for his exceptional kindness and selflessness, for which he was held in high esteem by his patients and his many, many friends.

He is survived by his long time partner, Noah M. Yonge of Brookline, MA, his brother, J. Christopher Amrhein and his wife Mary of Hingham, MA, his sister, Mary F. AmRhein and her husband, Donald Edy of Bow, NH, his aunt, Pearl Dalton, six nieces, one nephew, and twenty-four cousins.

Visiting hours will be held on Friday, March 18 from 3:00 to 8:00pm at the Dennis Sweeney Funeral Home 74 Elm St. Quincy Center. Family and friends are invited. On Saturday there will be a gathering at the funeral home at 10:00am followed by a Funeral Mass at Sacred Heart Church, Weymouth Landing at 11:30am. Burial will be at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, Weymouth.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research (www.michaeljfox.org), Church St. Station, P.O. Box 780, New York, NY 10008-0780.
