Obituaries

Louis Joseph ‘Mac’ DelGizzi born July 14, 1922, died surrounded by his family January 25, 2014. He lived 91 big years. He was the expert of heavy things. Mr. DelGizzi was a career machinist first class for Bethlehem Steel Fore River Shipyard and General Dynamics. He helped build warships, including the USS Massachusetts, and propeller shafts for cruisers and LNG tankers. He could engineer a solution for any problem. Mr. DelGizzi was proud of his craft. His name can be found inside a ship’s bell or two if one looks hard enough. He was the oldest of five children and born on Brackett Street in Quincy. Mr. DelGizzi attended the Coddington School. During the Depression he left school to help support his family. Mr. DelGizzi joined the Army and was a decorated World War II veteran who served in the Philippine Campaign. He met his wife of 62 years Dorothy ‘Dottie’ Perkins at Sevigny’s in Quincy. She cooked clams. He peeled potatoes. Together they had three children, played Kings in the Corner, and routinely accused the other of cheating at cards. Mr. DelGizzi played for the Quincy Bears club football team and was a lifetime member of the Town River Yacht Club. He loved working down the Cape with his brother Danny, growing tomatoes, a VO on the rocks, and fishing for flounder in his outboard around the Boston Harbor Islands. He and Dottie spent Saturday nights dancing with good friends at the yacht club. They never missed a good party. How sweet it was.

Survived by his brother Daniel and his sister Virginia, he was the loving father of Theresa and Dr. J. Lawrence Munson of Andover; Dorothy Moar of Hanover; and the late Louis H. DelGizzi. He is survived by his grandchildren Jennifer L. and Vincent VanDerLinden; Kristen Munson and Dayton Crites; Matthew C. Munson; Brendan M. and Elizabeth T. Moar; William V. and Louis A. DelGizzi; and two great-grandsons Logan T. and John R. VanDerLinden.

Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, January 29 from 4:00 to 8:00PM at the Dennis Sweeney Funeral Home 74 Elm St. Quincy Center. Family and friends are invited. On Thursday there will Funeral Service at the funeral home at 10:30AM. Burial is at Mt. Wollaston Cemetery, Quincy.
